Crowds are expected at Akureyri Airport today as the Icelandic Aviation Museum hosts its annual Aviation Day celebration. On display will be a range of aircraft, including a Czech Air Force Gripen fighter jet and a US Navy P-8 submarine-hunting plane.

The exhibition area opens from 1pm to 4pm, with formal events starting at 1:20pm, when the Akureyri Model Aircraft Association will present a model Grumman Goose flying boat to the museum. According to local reporters, Minister of Infrastructure Eyjólfur Ármannsson will officially open the event at 1:40pm.

What is in on display?

The flying displays begin at 2pm, featuring aerobatics, the Icelandic Coast Guard, and the country’s only seaplane. The historic DC-3 aircraft, known as the Páll Sveinsson Land Reclamation Plane, will also be open for viewing, having recently had its engines restarted after a lengthy pause.

Visitors can explore Norlandair aircraft, including a Twin Otter and Beechcraft King Air ambulance, as well as flight training options from the Akureyri Flight School.

Highlighting this year’s event is Flugsystur, a new women-only group launched by pilots Auður Birna Snorradóttir and Helga Sigurveig Kristjánsdóttir. The group welcomes women across the industry to “find strong support to make their aviation dreams come true.”

Weather in Akureyri is expected to be warm and clear today, with highs of 18°C and light winds.
