The annual summer solstice walk took place yesterday evening on Viðey Island, marking 25 years since the tradition first began.

Guðbrandur Benediktsson, director of the Reykjavik City History Museum, once again led the event. This year’s special guest was Ingibjörg Sólrún Gísladóttir, former chair of the Social Democratic Party. Last year’s guest was then-President Guðni Th. Jóhannesson.

Speaking to local reporters ahead of the walk, Guðbrandur described the event as a celebration of life and existence. “It is always wonderful to go out to Viðey, especially on the summer solstice,” he said.

The tradition was initiated by meteorologist Þór Jakobsson, who also spoke during the event. Despite a mixed weather forecast, the walk actually drew a good turnout.

Ferries departed from Skarfabakki at 8pm, with return journeys completed by 11pm. While there was no charge for the walk itself, attendees covered the cost of their ferry tickets.
