A long-held dream came true for 13-year-old Ægir Þór Sævarsson on Thursday when he met his football idol, Lionel Messi.
“Ever since I was five years old, I’ve been very interested in football and I’ve always been a fan of Messi,” Ægir told local media.
Ægir, who has Duchenne muscular dystrophy, is a devoted football fan and lifelong admirer of the Argentine sports star. Messi, who holds the record for the most goals scored for a single club in football history, greeted Ægir during a match between Inter Miami and Porto. The pair embraced and Messi even signed his Argentina jersey.
His mother, Hulda Björk Svansdóttir, said the meeting was made possible by Ægir Árný Ingvarsdóttir, director of the Icelandic support organisation Umhyggja. “When [a contact at FIFA] heard Ægir’s story, he was so inspired and found it so beautiful that he just wanted to get it all started,” she said.
The meeting came together in just 24 hours. “You felt it so much that everyone wanted to make it happen… people had tears in their eyes, just like us,” Hulda added.
