Reykjavík Pride officially launched yesterday with a noon ceremony in front of Reykjavík City Hall.

Drawing a large and enthusiastic crowd, the opening event featured speeches from Helga Haraldsdóttir, chair of Reykjavík Pride, and Sanna Magdalena Mörtudóttir, president of the Reykjavík City Council.

As reported by RÚV, rainbow flags were raised in celebration to mark the beginning of a week-long festival dedicated to diversity, inclusion, and LGBTQ+ rights.

A colourful and diverse programme is planned throughout the week, featuring a mix of cultural, educational, and community events.

The celebrations will culminate with the annual Pride Parade, set to depart from Hallgrímskirkja Lutheran Church at 2 PM this Saturday, August 10. As one of the city’s biggest public events of the year, organisers are expecting as many as 100,000 attendees to fill the streets of downtown Reykjavík.
