Yesterday, a tourist was rescued after falling into a deep hole in a mountainous area called Hoffellslón, south of Vatnajökull.

As reported by RÚV, the alarm was raised shortly before 3 a.m., prompting the Hornafjörður Rescue Society to respond.

Upon arrival, the team was assisted by two British rock climbers who reportedly training in the area. With the man’s exact position unclear, drones were used to help locate him, after which the rescue operation began.

Rescuers secured a position above the stranded individual, establishing a belay system and lifeline. A member of the team then descended to harness the man and bring him back to the surface.

Despite his ordeal, he was able to walk down the mountainside with the team. You can find photos of the operation in RÚV’s original article.

The entire operation was completed by 6 pm. According to a statement from the rescue team, the man was unharmed but shaken by the incident.
