Two boats caught fire in Bolungarvík Harbour today. It was reported that thick black smoke has hovered over the harbour and that a fire brigade has been on site.
Hlynur Snorrason, Chief of Police in Ísafjörður, confirms that the Bolungarvík Fire Department, the Ísafjörður Fire Department, and rescue workers are on mission to extinguish the fire.
The boats have been stocked in the harbor for some time. According to Snorrason, one of them is made of plastic and the other of steel. The police is not able to state the cause of the incident yet, but says an investigation will begin as soon as the firefighting mission is completed.
Bolungarvík is the northernmost village in the Westfjords, situated on an eponymous cove. It’s been know as one of the major fishing hubs in the region.
