Authorities in Iceland are urging visitors to stay away from newly formed lava fields as the ongoing volcanic eruption at the Sundhnúkur crater shows no signs of slowing.

According to Icelandic Met Office, the eruption continues with steady intensity, and shows continued magma accumulation. The experts say the lava is thickening and flowing beneath the surface, increasing risks. According to satellite data and ground measurements from engineering firms Verkís and Efla, the lava appears to be moving toward the Innri Sandhól spot — where many tourists have gathered.

Officials warn that thin “lava tongues” can unexpectedly break through the surface, and the edges of the lava field may collapse without notice. “The conditions are such that emergency responders cannot respond adequately,” police in Suðurnes warned, reinforcing earlier messages from the Icelandic Met Office.

The lava field now spans roughly one square kilometre. Despite repeated warnings, some visitors have been seen walking on the dangerous terrain. Weather forecasts predict a possibility of lightning over the southwest tonight and suggest volcanic gas pollution may spread northwest by Sunday. Light winds could also lead to a build-up of gas in populated areas. People in nearby towns are being advised to stay informed and exercise caution.
